The US Army saw the success of German mountain troops in Norway, and in response created its own elite mountain unit, the 10th Mountain Division. Elements of the 10th were the only US units deployed to both the Pacific and the ETO in WW2. After landing on Kiska only to find the Japanese gone, they shipped out for Italy, and drove the Germans from their vaunted \"Gustav\" line in early 1945. Special equipment was created to outfit the \"mountain men\" of the 10th, as well as the combined US/Canadian special mountain infantry known as the First Special Service Force, including a specially designed external frame ski rucksack. The ski rucksack incorporated a simple khaki canvas \"belly band\" to secure the ruck tightly against the trooper\'s waist while climbing. This US Army WW2 10TH MOUNTAIN FSSF M-1942 SKI RUCKSACK KHAKI BELLY BAND is in excellent condition, with some scratching to the darkened brass \"D\" ring at the left end, spots of greenish and orangish soiling at the interior right end, and with some light scattered edge nicking, spot soiling, and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the belly band is in excellent shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the tough khaki canvas web construction. Most interestingly, it boasts a fully functional darkened brass adjustment buckle, features the classic darkened brass \"D\" ring at the left end, and sports a fully intact darkened brass \"snap hook\" at the right end.
