Spanish Campaign Medal # 4180, engraved on the rim with thelast name “Lossau”. This medal was issued to Leon Lossau but appears to havebeen issued in error since he didn’t enlist until 1899, well past the cut offdate to quality for this medal. I have seen documentation on numerous othercases of campaign medals being issued in error to both enlisted men andofficers. (In my collection I have an “unearned” Cuban Pacification Medal thathas the original transmittal letter. The recipient’s service file contains nomention of the issue of this medal but his name is on the transmittal letter!) Asshown in the photos, the medal has been re-ribboned and has the proper splitwrap brooch with open catch, as used by the manufacturer, Bailey, Banks andofferdle.

With the medal are 50 pages of research that were scannedfrom Lossau’s service file in St. Louis. Please note that NO ORIGINAL DOCUMENTSare included with the medal. You will receive a cd-rom with color scans of allof the documents.

Lossau was born in Philadelphia in 1881. He first enlistedin 1899 and served continuously until transferred to the Fleet Reserve in1919. He was placed on the Retired Listin 1929 but was called back for one month of active duty in 1941. Because hewas called back, his service file was placed in the “WWII block” of records.Unfortunately many files in this block are missing medal records, which is thecase with Lossau’s file. Leon Lossau died in Florida in 1956. He is buried inMemorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida.
