Up for sale is thisbronze medal depicting USS Aaron Ward, DD-483, a World War II, Gleaves-ClassDestroyer. The USS Aaron Ward was builtby FederalShipbuilding and Drydock Company in Kearny, New Jersey. The ship was begun on February 11, 1941,launched on November 22, 1941 and Commissioned March 4, 1942. Shewas just over 348 feet long, displaced 2090 tons and carried a crew of 208.The USSAaron Ward was sunk in battle on April 7, 1943 off the south coast of FloridaIsland or Ironbottom Sound, close to Guadalcanal. As a result of the attack, 20 men died, 59were wounded and 7 were missing. Aaron Ward was awarded four battle stars for her World War IIservice.The obverse of this medal depicts the shipUSS Aaron Ward at sea. At the top, “FRACOLLECTORS SERIES” and at the bottom, is the name,“USS AARON WARD”. Thereverse of this medal, has the words “LOYALTY”,“PROTECTION” and “SERVICE”. In the center, FRA (Fleet Reserve Association) USN,USMC, USCG. The medal has a reeded edge.
