This Mars-class combat stores ship was the third ship named for the
California city of San Diego; her keel was laid down on 11 March 1967
at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company of San Diego; shewas
launched on 13 April 1968 and was commissioned on
24 May 1969, the 200th anniversary year (1769-1969) of
the city as depicted on the insert circle on the insignia
The San Diego served for twenty-four years and was
decommissioned on 11 August 1993 and was simultaneously
placed in service by the Military Sealift Command (MSC)
as USNS San Diego (T-AFS-6)
The ship was placed out of service on 10 December 1997 and
was laid up at the Naval Inactive Ship Facility at
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; she was struck from the
U.S. Naval Vessel Register on 8 September 2003
and was sold for scrapping on 9 April 2006
