USSWhitney(AD-4)was aDobbin-classdestroyer tendernamed forUnited States Secretary of the NavyWilliam Collins Whitney. She was launched on 12 October 1923, and was commissioned on 2 September 1924. She was decommissioned on 22 October 1946, later being sold for scrap to theDulien Ship Productsfirm on 18 March 1948. She was on station inPearl Harborat the time of theJapanese attack, amid a flotilla of destroyers;Tucker,Conyngham,Reid,Case, andSelfridge. TheWhitneywas undamaged during the attack, and in 1948 was sold for scrap metal.

Dallas police detectiveJim Leavelle, who became famous for escorting presidential assassinLee Harvey Oswaldto prison, was a former sailor on theWhitney, and was on board during the destroyer during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
