The Brood Sagainjected a ton of energy into the book. The X-Men in space is always a littlestrange but it’s a recurring device in the series that can help cleanse thepalate from the mutant angst themes. This was closer to a horror and suspensestory. It was at times trippy, disorienting, and a little gruesome (for anall-ages superhero comic from 1982).

The Brood are analien race of bug-like gross things. Visually, they are more than a littleinspired by the space creatures from the Alien movies starring SigourneyWeaver. But they can talk and shoot guns and fly space ships.

Once againWolverine gets the spotlight as the coolest guy around, but in the context ofthe story it makes sense. Due to his adamantium skeleton and healing abilities,he’s the only one that ends up breaking free from The Brood. I want to be alittle big vague here because I think there’s a really cool reveal that isactually quite unsettling that is best discovered in the story. Wolverine isthe first to figure out this unsettling secret and is tormented over revealingit to his teammates once he helps them escape. Of course, the truth ultimatelycomes out, and everything works out but the journey there has some unexpectedturns and weird mythology building that felt fresh for the series.

There’s somenice character moments throughout this. For example, Peter and Kitty finallyverbalize what’s been pretty obvious for awhile: they like like each other.But, she just turned 14 and he doesn’t want to be a pedophile because being inspace doesn’t make you not a pedophile. Still, it’s a sweet scene and PaulSmith’s art really relays how tender and sincere Peter is being.

And Scott makesa vengeful decision to go back and kill the Brood’s Queen, which establishes adarker side to Scott that comes back years later.

The X-Men were ambushed and are now at themercy of the deadly Shi\'ar renegade Deathbird and her sinister accomplices thealien Brood (see the last pages of Uncanny X-Men #161 to see how it happened).Now, the feral X-Man Wolverine fights the battle of his life within and withoutas a Brood embryo attempts to hatch inside his body, thus killing him andusurping his body and mind - forever!

#167. \"The GoldilocksSyndrome! (or: Who\'s Been Sleeping in My Head?)\" Part 6 of 6.Guest-starring the Fantastic Four, Starjammers, and the New Mutants. The X-Men return home to Xavier\'s Institute tofind they\'ve been replaced. But their skirmish with the New Mutants is theleast of their concerns. Charles Xavier has been impregnated with a BroodQueen. In order to save mankind, the X-Men may be forced to take the life oftheir beloved mentor. Plus, the Shi\'ar Majestrix Lilandra visits a warning onReed Richards for the crime of saving the life of Galactus.
