DESCRIPTION
Offered for sale is this very unusual, Victorian, intricately carved, Coquilla Nut, Flea Trap. Carved from Brazilian Coquilla Nut in approx 1870's.This flea trap has a suspension loop for hanging between the large skirt layers. In the 18th & 19th century, flea traps were often filled with a few drops of blood honey or resin, [depending on your wealth]. Supposedly fleas would be attracted by the blood, enter through the holes and get stuck in the honey or resin. Normally you see the egg shaped ones, that where used in the beds, but this one is very unusual for hanging within the layers of clothing. Measures 2 & 1/4 inches in length approx. This is one ot two flea traps being listed this week. Unscrews for access, in good order, there is a partial hole to one edge, possibly a knot in the patina has become detached or possibly a mark from how it was made. Overall good order, a very unusual item.
