UnusualAllie Clevenger free-blown 7 inch Lilypad Pitcher South Jersey 1930-45Ever wanted to own a piece that appeared in a book? Here’s yourchance!

From its founding in 1930 to its closure in 1999, theClevenger Brothers Glass Company of Clayton, NJ was known to produce hand blownglass that could fool the experts, blowing classic reproductions of earlyAmerican South Jersey glass.

Offered here is an unusual Clevenger Lilypad Pitcher madeby Allie Clevenger dating circa 1930-1945. The pitcher stands 7 inches tallwith an applied crimped foot with pontil mark, and a strap handle with one ofAllie Clevenger’s wide curving handle attachments. Unlike most Clevenger lilypadpieces, there is no fine threading surrounding the neck of this piece. Thepiece is also unusual for its florid shape, with top and bottom portionsslightly more bulbous and curvy than the standard Clevenger lilypad piece.

This pitcher can trace provenance to Allie Clevenger throughhis friend John Oesterling of Bridgeton, NJ, and South Jersey glass collector D.Stratton Woodruff. An unnamed member of the Clevenger family, Woodruff, and Ipurchased this pitcher and about 140 free-blown glass pieces that made upOesterling’s Clevenger glass collection from his widow in March 1988. UponWoodruff’s retirement from collecting in 1998, I purchased most of theOesterling collection pieces from him.

The only flawon this piece is a clean break-off of a portion of one of the lilypad pull-updecorations. Because the break is so clean, it looks like the piece just pulledoff in-manufacture. There is also some furnace debris along the rim androughness on the underside of the spout, probably in-manufacture.

This exact piece is displayed in my book on ClevengerBrothers glass, LastLinks to the Past 20thCentury South Jersey Glass . Figure 416 on Page 206.
