An unusual large 19th C. gray painted wooden firkin, C. 1850-1870. This wonderful painted firkin is constructed with square nails & interlocking wooden staves, the inverted shape is unusual. It retains most of its original gray painted surface, completely untouched. It is in wonderful condition, with minor loss near two nails on the top band, a thin age crack on the lid & some later nails added. The lid is still very solid & structurally sound, no other major damages or repairs. Because of shrinkage, the wooden bands have moved slightly. This early firkin measures 13 1/4\" tall, 12\" in diameter at the bottom & 13 7/8\" by 14 1/8\" at the top. An excellent piece of early Americana, offered with .
