This is a very unusual jar which I would love to know more about... looks to me like possibly a Tobacco humidor or spice jar, as when the lid is lifted, a chain linked separator withdrawals from the base. There is also what appears to be a place to attach a sponge if being used as a humidor. No matter, it is a very special piece. Maybe made of copper or bronze, heavier than tin, with an embossed, monogrammed leather band wrapped around the bottom. The top shows a very nicely articulated Art Deco style elephant balancing delicately on what appears to be a circus base. The elephant is solid and quite heavy for its size. The entire piece measures approximately 5 3/4 inches tall and the base measures almost 3 inches across. There is wear that is commensurate with age but no damage or repairs found.
