US MODEL 1917 NAVY CUTLASS SWORD & SCABBARD, ORIGINAL, NEAR MINT, SCARCE:
$605.00

This is an extremely scarce US Model 1917, Cutlass, the only sword ever manufactured by the US Navy. It is in excellent and nearly mint condition, the only negatives being a few marks on the original wooden grips, and a few tiny specks on the guard. The blade is virtually perfect, and the scabbard is the same- a few places where the finish could use some fresh blacking, but nearly perfect- with a leather throat that I had not seen before. Most often you see these with a klewang scabbard, but this one, although similar, is different. The drag appears to be tin, like those found on klewangs, but the throat is beautifully made black leather. The sword is 30 1/2 inches long overall, and the blade is 25 1/4 inches. The sword is perfectly straight, and very tight.
These were made during WWI, and initially a contract had been offered to the Ames Sword Company, but Ames declined, due to already existing contracts. As a result, these were made by the Navy itself. It seems likely, from what I have read, that these were never issued, as the 1860 Cutlass still abounded, and is far more attractive. Note, this is NOT a klewang! It has the large, solid sheet metal guard, and the incredibly clear USN markings of the Model 1917. It is also more substantial than the kelwang, if you examine them in comparison.Payment needs to be made within three days of the end of the sale. Exceptions must be by PRIOR arrangement.

Please note: we will not ship to the Russian Federation.
