Utagawa Sadafusa Early 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Prints, Warrior Diptych:
$85.00

Utagawa Sadafusa, of the Utagawa ukiyo-e school ofwoodblock artistry, designed this woodblock print in approximately 1830, when it was created. He was a pupil of Kunisada, and he often created images of scenes from Kabuki Theatre, of which this print is an exciting example.
This diptych consists of twoprintsconnected at a central fold. Overall, the diptych measures 14.25\" x 19\", and it has been held within a protective sleeve of heavy paper. The print has yellowedand the center seam will requirerestoration, as it has split halfway up from the bottom.
The printand the sleeve have notations from a previous owner stating the work is by \"Sadafusa\", but the exterior has a \"Sadahide\" notation. After consulting an expert and matching the style and signatures, the work is indeed by Sadafusa, as listed.
The rear of the print is covered with Japanese script, as seen in the photos. I have not had this translated, but I understand that this is not uncommon.
Thecolors are dominantly pink, blue, and gray with touches of deep green. Aside from some surface scuffing, this piece will only require mild restoration prior to framing.
Thankfully, the diptych has been well-stored and preserved over the decades, and I hope it will find a proud place in thecollection of a Japanese art enthusiast!
