This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the \"red\" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous \"coat of arms\" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the \"shilling\" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.

The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.

This particular guide dates from 1913/14, 9th edition revised. Details as follows :

Area covered : Harrogate, including Knaresborough, Ripon, Ilkley, Bolton Abbey, Fountains Abbey, Pateley Bridge and surrounding areas of North Yorkshire.

Contents :150 pages of text, plus 98 pages of fascinating old advertisements.4 maps (all present) and 16 sketch plans. Over 60 illustrations.

Overall condition : Very good, although with some wear.

Maps : Excellent. All the fold-out maps are present and complete, with no damage or markings.

Covers : Very good. Normal wear. No markings or damage.

Spine : Very good. Normal wear. No markings or damage.

Binding : Excellent.

Pages : Very good. Normal wear.Some discolouration, especially at edges.
