This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the \"red\" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous \"coat of arms\" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the \"shilling\" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.

The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.

This particular guide dates from 1917/18. This is a new (1st) edition of this guide. Details as follows :

Area covered : Seaford, including Newhaven, Alfriston, Lewes, Eastbourne, the Sussex Downs and surrounding areas of the East Sussex coast.

Contents : 136 pages of text, plus 70 pages of fascinating old advertisements. 3maps (one of which is missing) and 4 sketch plans. Over 70 illustrations.

Overall condition : Externally worn and damaged, internally good.

Maps : One of the 3 maps (the town plan of Eastbourne) is missing. The other maps and the sketch plans are present and undamaged.

Covers : Good. Normal wear. Some bumping to corners, and slight fading. Noother markings or damage, but because of the damage to the spine cloth, the front cover hasseparated from the binding.

Spine : Poor. The spine cloth is torn and some parts of the cloth are missing.

Binding : The binding of the text block is very good. Front cover and the first two pages are loose.

Pages : Very good. Normal wear/ Slight discolouration. The top corners of theadvertisement pages have been neatly cut off. No other markings or damage.

Other : Small pen inscription inside front cover (has been inked out).
