It is rare to find such an early engraved lonka lonka or pearl shell. These were made exclusively in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, but were an important trade item that was traded right accross the Central Desert of Australia. They had a range of functions. In the coastal regions where they were more abundant they were used as pubic covers. By the time they reached the Central desert they were much rarer and they had a more sacred function, for example used in rain making ceremonies. Note the very fine work in the human hair belt, and thinness of the ground down pearl shell. It has engraved designs on the front and back . It also has a repair line running horizontally accross the shell. Definitely an important collectors example
