Very Primitive Old Wooden Tabletop Or Hanging Cupboard Great Old Paint Nr:
This is one of those odd old pieces that is a bit of a mystery as to its original intended purpose. I was drawn to it for its wonderful old, worn white painted interior and red painted sides as well as its form which struck me as somewhat similar in shape to a child's stepback cupboard, though you will notice that it would be a three-tier stepback rather than the usual two-tier stepback. Anyway, I'm quite sure it was not built for a child's use, but I have no idea what it once held. I've filled it with smalls from around my home and love how primitive it looks. It could be hung or sit flat on a table or counter. There are no drawers or anything of that nature and its back is rather odd............no backing. It is 24" high, 16 1/2" wide and 7 1/4" deep at the bottom. It appears to be made of 1/2" thick pine throughout with the exception of the left side, (left as you are looking at it head on), which is a heavy duty 3/16" thick masonite type of material and is not pine. Some of the outside bottom has a newer addition of 1/4" thick plywood and it looks to me like this was added so that the piece would sit flatly on a surface but it is not visible when sitting ona flat surface.A very odd piece..........wonderfully primitive and is probably an early to mid-20th Century piece. I do love the paint and feel that it is original. If I had to rate the paint on the "good, better, best" scale, I would rate it as "best" because of the wear and crazing. There is years of accumulated grime. I have given it nothing more than a surface dusting. A primitive that you can have fun with. .

A note about AAFA: AAFA stands for Antique Americana & Folk Art. I am pleased to be among a select group of invited sellers who specialize in the sale of antiques, primitives and folk art. When you see AAFA in an item title, it should mean that the item is a true unenhanced antique and not a “vintage”, altered, or newly crafted piece. There are some unauthorized sellers who are applying the AAFA banner without permission to items that do not meet our criteria. I see this on a daily basis despite polite reminders from authorized sellers. Reproductions, even good ones, have NO PLACE under an AAFA listing, Sellers who do this are trying to capitalize on a reputation and client base that we have attempted to build over the past 4 years. Before offerding on an “AAFA” item, please read the seller’s description carefully, (be wary of wording like, “AAFA Like”, “Antique Like” or “antique style“), and review their response. We are working to challenge any false use of “AAFA”.
