VERY RARE WWII M42 German Helmet >>> Quist Q64 Original with leather Liner:
$500.00

From the research we have done since receiving this helmet for sale indicates that it is a rare Quist M42 64.
We have taken excellent photo\'s and invite the serious collectors on to offer their response. The helmet has an intact leather liner and is only missing its drawstring and chinstrap. The helmet itself has a few spots of surface rust but is all original paint and has not been retouched. The only thing that has been done is lexol leather preservative has been applied to the liner.
And as a side note... I just finished reading \'The forgotten Soldier\' by Guy Sajer for the 3rd time and must say that I have been an avid reader since 1964 and have read almost everything from Sci-fi to documentaries to historical to general fiction to science periodicals and this novel grips me completely every time I pick it up. Some have fairly criticized errors in historical details but if i look at it as an adult male trying to come to grips with an unfathomable hell experienced as a child of 16-18 during 3 years of fighting on the Russian front then it contains a crystal clear raw detailing of his experiences.
The information below is from:The M42 German helmet, the End of an EraOctober 20, 2016The Quist M42

When the directive came down from the German high command to no longer roll the helmet rim one firm did not comply. For reasons that are still not clearF.W. Quist G.m.b.H., Esslingendid not heed the order, andcontinued to produce M40helmets, rightinto 1945.Quistappears to have gotten some push back about their refusal to producethe raw-rimmed M42 and documents have surfaced thatin mid 1944Quistwas again directed by German high command to produce raw rimmed helmets. This they did, but in very small numbers.Heating lot numbers found on original M42s from this factory indicate production started on these helmets in mid-1944likelyright afterQuistreceived the second directive.Still it appears thatQuistshowed no real desire to mass produce M42 helmets andvery few have been found today.

As of the writing of this piece thoseQuist marked M42 that have turned up are only foundin size 64.It would seem to indicate that in order to placate the directiveQuistdedicationonly one production line to making M42.The rest of their production would continue to makeM40s.As to date no documentation has surfaced as to whyQuistdelayed following the directive. One theorythat has been put forward is thatQuistwasproud of the high quality M40 they manufactured.QuistM40s aremade from slightly thicker steel than helmets made by the other firms. The designshow a high degree of craftsmanship with smooth flowing lines and flawlessly rolled rims.Helmets from this firmare rarely found with any flaws.

Hi, Just another plug for \"The Forgotten soldier\".Several critics online say to simply read it as a \'novel\' and not as an historical account but I would like to offer theseobservations... 1. If Guy Sajer was simply a \'novelist\' writing fiction and he wrote a novel so compelling, gripping and raw, then why did he write only one book? 2. Why did he publish is as an account of a Frenchman freely serving in the Wehrmacht during WWII when at the time of publishing any Frenchman who had any sympathy for the nazis was considered a traitor? 3. Why did his \'hero\' not have any redeeming qualities? His account of service is only one of survival coupled with lucky chances and a number of humiliating failures. No feats of \'heroism\', only guilt over having survived when so many friends and \'kameraden\' died.
