VERY SMALL EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & BIBLICAL QUOTATION SAMPLER - c.1835:

Very small early 19th century linen and silk work sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly earlier. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with a heart and floral motif above and a pair of birds below flanked by a fruit basket. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation
Boast not thyself of tomorrowFor thou knowest not what a day may bring forth
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn with two floral motifs above and a flower, dog and tree down each side. The whole thing is then surrounded by a strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly brown, and the colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are some very small areas of damage to the field of the linen and more extensive areas around the edges, some of the damage having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight the damage, but once on a similar coloured backing it would be less noticeable.Measures 6 1/4\" x 8 1/4\"
