This is a Victorian sterling (.925) silver cigar case with period inscription as pictured.

The case measures approximately 5\" tall by 3\" wide and it is about 3/4\" deep.

The inscription front centre reads:-

\"MR RUSSELL PYMM / FROM / SIMLA GYMKHANA CLUB / SIMLA 1889\".

Simla is the former name of Shimla, a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, formerly the summer capital of British India and the Punjab Province.
In the booklet \"Residents of Simla 1898\" printed by Pagoda Tree Press, Mr Russell Austin Pymm (believed to have been born in Simla circa 1862) is shown to be working locally as a Hairdresser (between 1885 and 1889).

Thecase has been assayed in Birmingham during 1887 by Colen Hewer Cheshire.

It weighs 5.24 imperial ounces which is 4.78 troy ounces or 148.8 grams. I have pictured the assay marks close up for you below ( both halves are marked).

There are a few signs of age and use as you might expect after so many years and it would benefit from good polish all over to restore former glory. There are the usual light, faint minor scuffs and scratches that all silver objects such as thistend to attract over the years plus a variety of small dings, impact type dents and surface depressions to both the front and rear surfaces. There is no particular damage around the edges to highlight. The inner elastic cigar retainer is still present but it is slack andwill probably need to be replaced quite soon if you intend to use the case as originally intended. The easiest way to achieve this is to swap over an elastic from a cheap modern base metal case.
