ARTIST: Unknown, English School SUBJECT: Landscape, a monastery in an expansive landscape, probably Heidelberg Castle on the river Neckar, Germany MEDIUM: Watercolour on paper, with a matt over. SIGNATURE: Unsigned DATE: c1880 - 1900 SIZE: Viewable painting within matt, 27 x 20cm (10.5x 7.75 inches), frame 48.5 x 42cm (19 x 16.5 inches) PROVENANCE: Private collection CONDITION: Very good for its age, with strong contrast and colourfast throughout; the work was probably cleaned in antiquity, at which time it was re-framed, with some minor foxing spots noticed in the sky area, mainly to the right quarter, do not detract. We have not inspected the work outside its frame. FRAME: The gilded and glazed frame is later, c1920s or so with the aged remnants of its gallery label to verso, shows light age related wear.

The work appears unsigned. A Victorian work, of the English School in our opinion, full of depth and with fine attention to detail, a super quality work.
