VINTAGE BLACK AMERICANA - KIDS EATING WATERMELON - 2 STEREOSCOPE CARD STEREOTYPE:
$4.99

Up for sale is a pair of vintage stereoscope cards with a stereotypical subject -- black children eating watermelon. In the pop culture of the time of these viewer cards, black Americans were often objects of caricature by a white society that in many cases had little contact or understanding of black people. In the first of these dual-image cards (copyrighted by Griffith & Griffith), a black man comes across 3 kids eating watermelon and declares, \"Dem Brats Done Gone and Stole dat Melon.\"In the second of the cards, the man vows, \"I\'se Gwine to Tan Yo\'r Hide.\"The threat to \"tan the hide\" of the kids is another illustration of how American norms have changed in the last century, as corporal punishment of children, like racial stereotypes, is not acceptable to many Americans today. These cards, measuring about 7 inches long and almost 3 1/2 inches high, were meant to be viewed in stereoscopes, hand-hand devices popular a century ago, somewhat similar to the viewmasters common in the 1960s.The 2 stereoscope cards up for sale, both in fine condition, will be shipped within ONE DAY of cleared payment. Thanks for viewing these historical items!
