The Hamburg greeting \"Hummel, Hummel - Mors, Mors\" is a traditional saying or exclamation in Hamburg , in which one person responds to a second one with \"Hummel, Hummel\", which responds to \"Mors, Mors\". It is less a typical greeting in Hamburg, but rather is used as a sign and battle cry of Hamburgers.
The greeting is probably due to the water bearer Johann Wilhelm Bentz , who died in 1854, who under the nickname Hummel or Hans Hummel belonged to the old Hamburg originals and has remained to this day a well-known and popular Hamburg figure .
The children of the surrounding area liked the heavily laden water carrier Bentz and called him in ridicule \"Hummel, Hummel\". Bentz, who could not physically defend himself because of the heavy load, always answered with \"Mors, Mors\", as a short form of \"Klei di an\'n Mors\". The latter is often described in the literature as low or flat German variant of the Swabian greeting (\"Leck mich am Arsch\"). (Wikipedia)
