Chimu Culture Textile/Pre-Colombian Textile, Central Coast Peru, circa 15th century (or before?), 3.75\" (excluding fringe) x 36\"A fascinating fragment which once composed the fringe of a complete tunic. Adorned with what may be sacred birds, repesenting sacred imagery to them, executed in varying colors throughout, the fine weave and lovely colors are evident throughout, uncompromised by the passage of time. The length of this textile is 3’ and the width is 3.75 inches (without the reddish fringe). The condition is good.

The Chimú were the residents of Chimor, with its capital at the city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche Valley of present-day Trujillo city. The culture arose about 900 AD. The Inca ruler Tupac Inca Yupanqui led a campaign which conquered the Chimú around 1470 AD
This was just fifty years before the arrival of the Spanish in the region.

Consequently, Spanish chroniclers were able to record accounts of Chimú culture from individuals who had lived before the Inca conquest.
