Seymour, Connecticut (1877-1951)-Augers, Awls, Bits, Boring Machines, Chisels, Draw Knives, Handles, Screwdrivers.Swan, who was born in Dumfries, Scotland, December 18, 1833, immigrated from Scotland in 1854 and worked at the Bassett Iron Works in Birmingham, CT, the Farrel Foundry & Machine Co in Ansonia, CT, and for Oliver Annes before buying Annes\'s business in 1877. The \"Est. 1856\" date is probably Annes\'s. He acquired Douglass Mfg. Co. and changed its name, but apparently still used its name in 1894. Swan had multiple patents for machine sot make augers etc.The Swan company, along with the Stanley Rule & Level Co., are considered to be the last manufacturers of fine edge tools working at the end of the classic period of American tool making.)
This fully complete USN bit set was used in the mechanical repair shop in WW2 after the Pearl Harbor bombing on ships and subs that came in for refurb/repair. My grandfather and Grand Uncle were master mechanics at the Shipyard. The box includes an extender of some other piece i can\'t identify, but is included. There is wear, discoloration and rust on the bits and I didn\'t clean or try to restore it due to its significant historical value. Comes in the original SWAN, finger-jointed Oak storage box and blue labels inside.
