A unique vase (hibachi) with side handes in the shape of elephants.This large bronze vasewas orginally used as a space heater and had a bed of ash on which charcoal would sit. It is the same type that was used in Japanese inns over a century ago to provide heat for tea and to warm individual rooms. It is made of a thick bronze/brass alloy and dates to the late Meiji Era (c. 1910).

This hibachi vase has a well formed tuck and flare waisted bottom (see picture 8) and sits very flat and level on the floor. It also has interesting sculptural side handles in the shape ofelephants with extended trunks that were intended as a way to carry it while hot with charcoal. Looking inside you can seewhere the ash fill once was (see picture 3).

This hibachi has been well used yet well loved, and aside from one small spot near the handle (see picture 6) it remains in very fine condition with a deep dark bronze patina.It measures 9 1/2\" high by 12\" wide including the handles (24 x 32 cm). It is 9 1/4\" across at the mouth (23 cm). It is water tight and would make an excellent Ikebana flower arranger or container for a potted plant.
