VINTAGE PAPUA NEW GUINEA MIDDLE SEPIK RIVERHAND-CARVED & HAND-DECORATEDHORNBILLEDBIRD, WOODEN SCULPTUREon BLACK SPRAYEDENAMELMETAL PLATE STANDOCEANIC TRIBAL ART(Circa 1930\'s)This amazing vintage Papua New Guinea Middle Sepik River oceanic art hand-carved and hand-decorated wooden tribal sculpture of a horn-billed pelican, is simply wonderful. It is clearly from the hands of an experienced and gifted carver. The horn-billed pelican or sub-species of local long beaked water fowl, has great lines, figuration and outstanding color. The paint consists of a charcoal, putty, berry red and yellow ochre flat, matte finish paint. The eyes are comprised of two flipped over semi-transparent yellow shells. There is some material loss at the very end of the pelican\'s beak and some more minor material loss at the very ends of the feet. The loss at the beak doesn\'t interrupt the form or disrupt the flow of viewing the piece. The painted surface has incidental scuffing, some minor abrasions and evidence of rubbing. The black metal base plate also has some flakes of missing paint but is otherwise in good condition. All flaws are evidence of its vintage pedigree and add, not subtract from its overall presence and antique ambiance. It is a hand-crafted oceanic work from the 1930\'s to 1940\'s and is not a more recent Papua New Guinea Middle Sepik River wooden sculpture and for that reason, the wood and paint loss would be considered commensurate with its age. Visually compelling and beautiful.
