VINTAGE SCHWINN 04 115 UNION SPORTLIGHT GENERATOR DYNAMO BICYCLE BIKE LIGHT SET:

(This is a tire-driven generator set, NOT battery-operated!)

This is a good example of a used Schwinn Sportlight generator set, part number 04 115, made about 1970 (the generator and headlight carry different dates) for Schwinn by Union of West Germany.

This set was slightly smaller than the Deluxe set, also produced by Union, and was better scaled for smaller bikes such as the Sting-Ray or Krate. As the Deluxe set got progressively more expensive, the price of this one stayed a little lower, so that by its last year of issue around 1973, you could get this Sportlight set for only $7.50. The Deluxe set would have cost you $9.95.

This kit includes:

6-volt, 2.4-watt headlight: almost 2½\" in diameter (60mm) and 4\" long; chrome steel; with bracket
6-volt, 0.6-watt taillight: 1¾\" in diameter (45mm) and 1½\" long; red plastic with clear side lenses
Tire-driven 6-volt, 3-watt generator
All mounting brackets and hardware

The taillight has two downward-facing clear side lenses, one on each side, which seem to be intended to light up your derailleur at night, so you can look down and see what gear you\'re in. (One of the two beams is visible in the lower left corner of photo 7, althoughI don\'t know how effective that really is in use.) All chrome has been polished and waxed, as well as the plastic lenses.

I don\'t have the original installation instructions for this set, but I will include a free copy of the instructions for the Deluxe set, which is very similar to this one and installs the same way.

The headlight and taillight were both disassembled, polished and waxed, including both lenses, and overall condition is good. Both bulbs are correct new replacements. The chrome finish shows some weathering overall, but polished back up to a decent shine, and was waxed to keep it that way. Basically, this is not a mint-condition set, but this is still an extremely nice set for either a restored bike or a daily rider, and is in full working order.
