The Kingman turquoise mine, operated by the Colbaughfamily in Arizona, is the last remaining commercially producing mine in theUnited States. Evidence suggests turquoise was mined in the surrounding areasdating as far back as 600 AD. Tools like stone hammers were found in theancient trenches and tunnels running through the hills in 1962. Today, eventhe quality natural turquoise from Kingman has become rare in the wake ofrising demand for good quality American turquoise.

Not only are they believed to provide good health, itwas a way to carry one’s wealth with them. Many Old Pawn pieces were inlayedwith turquoise which made them highly valuable and a way to secure fortune intimes of trouble. If financial support was needed, families would “pawn” theirheirlooms for a specific period of time. If the debt couldn’t be repaid withinthe agreed upon timeframe it would be sold to the general public.
