VINTAGE BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN STYLE PARASOL BROOCH OR PIN, SIGNED STERLING, ARTIST SIGNED TRAPHAGEN, VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION, 1940\'S ? ***PLEASE VIEW ALL IMAGES AND READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION***

Up for purchase is this beautiful vintage signed Victorian parasol brooch or pin. The brooch appears to be hand wrought sterling and is approximately 2 1/2\" tall and 1 1/2\" at the widest point. This piece has nice detail with lines in the partially closed parasol and also in the frilly lace like border. The brooch is signed sterling and Traphagen on the back. While researching the piece the only other pieces of Traphagen sterling I found were by Peter Traphagen, a master California silversmith who made hollow ware and silver jewelry in the 1930\'s and forties. I found his signature on a piece of hollow ware but was unable to locate an image of how he signed his jewelry. The font was the same on the hollow ware piece as it is on this piece, however the larger piece had his full name surrounded by an oval. I\'m sure those of you more familiar with his work will be able to determine if he created this beautiful little pin.

The pin is well constructed and made of two individual pieces of sterling welded or soldered together. The stem has been reinforced with a second piece of silver attached at the bottom below the bow and up to the frilly part of the parasol. The pin mechanism is a little unusual as the stem fits in the top rather than on the side and then the safety clasp slides over to keep it in place. It works fine but I thought I would mention it as I haven\'t seen one like this before. I included images of this with the safety clasp both open and closed.

The pin is in very good to excellent vintage condition. I polished and buffed the front of this piece as it was heavily tarnished. I cleaned the back a little so that I could photograph the marks but there is still a good bit of tarnish left. The safety catch is intact and the pin mechanism works as it should. There are also some light scratches in the sterling but nothing too noticeable. The bottom back of the stem has some nicks as does the back of the bow but I believe this occurred during the making of the pin as it only appears on the back. All photos have been enlarged to show the flaws and attributes of the piece in better detail. Please view all the images to get a better idea of the condition of this pin.
