Up for your consideration is this vintage matching set of hand painted spice tin caddy and 6 canisters. The caddy and canisters are adorned with hand painted red flowers and buds. The set background color is green that had been antiqued and was used for the inside as well as the outside of the spice caddy.

The hinged tole ware spice caddy measures approx. 9-1/2\" wide x 6-1/2\" deep x 3-1/2\" tall. It is in great solid vintage condition. I don\'t see any dings, but there is a little paint loss on edges.

The matching tole ware spice canisters measure 3\" tall x 3\" diameter. They are in great vintage condition with minimal paint loss, but there is 1 dent at the bottom of one canister. All six canisters have the aroma of spices they once held and have areas of minor tarnishing/oxidation on the insides typical of their age and use.

FOR YOUR GENERAL BACKGROUND:

Spice Boxes: As spice was an important means of flavoring foods, households commonly kept special spices that were used in sealed tins. These tins would be kept secured in the Spice Box made of Toleware finally becoming known as Toleware Spice Boxes. The lid often had a raised embossing with a bail handle to carry the box. It also would have a clasp so that the box could be secured by a lock as spices were expensive. Each box was large enough to hold around 6 spice cans of approximately 3 to 4 ounces. These tins too would be finished the same as the box making them a set. The spice tin often were round but they too were made in square shapes. The common spices were Nutmeg, Cinnamon, All Spice, Cloves, Mace and Ginger. Because nut meg required grating, a grater often was included the slide into the underside of the lid.
