Item Description:
This wonderful vintage Zulu basket comes with the original tag which identifies the weaver as Joyce Hlabison. This basket was found at an estate sale with a collection of other large Zulu baskets - all with the identification tags still attached. This basket has been beautifully woven of Ilala Palm and grasses. All of the colors are natural; obtained from roots, leaves, berries and bark. This basket has a very attractive round shape which is accentuated by the woven design. The basket measures approximately 20 inches high and approximately 12 inches across. This basket is in excellent vintage condition.
The weave of this type of Zulu basket is tight enough to hold liquid. This type of basket is also called a Ukhamba or beer basket. Liquid and corn would be mixed together in the basket and set aside to ferment into beer. The beauty, size and weave of this basket easily qualifies it as a collector quality basket.
Zulu women are renowned for their artistry and craftsmanship. Women weave these baskets in their homes using indigenous raw materials. It can take up to a month to weave a medium size basket and longer for a basket of this size. Each basket is unique in shape and design. The Zulu tribe is located in South Africa and they are considered to be among the best basketmakers in the world.
