Description

VIZAGAPATAM Antique INDIAN PARQUETRY BOX c1900

Super antique Vizagaptam Indian parquetry decorated wood box, circa 1900. Sandalwood smothered with exotic materials including ebony and metal (possibly silver, probably pewter) etc. Smart octagonal design.

Dimensions: approx 118mm x 50mm.

Condition: As is often the case with this delicate work after 100 years or so there will almost certainly will be minor condition issues. This box may well have had small turned or ball design feet which are now missing. There are numerous cracks in the inlay panels. There are some missing micro mosaic pieces & stringing, not a huge number but enough to notice on close scrutiny. One of the eight side sections of the cover frame is still strongly attached but its side joints have dried out so there are visible gaps between the two adjoining panels on each side, it bows outwards a little bit. This is quite stable but could be fixed with a squirt of glue & a clamp if required. Overall the condition of this box is very good & the various imperfections add to the ancient look! The colour remains clean & bright.
