Description

Christmas Putz is the name for the little village scenes that folks display under their trees each year at Christmas. The tradition is VERY old, and probably comes from Germany. The word Putz is German for plaster, and many of the antique pieces were made from plaster (chalk) or from composite, which had a main component of plaster. So \"Plaster\" village is what it really translate to. Putz scenes today are a combination of everything - old, new, plastic and antique - whatever catches the fancy of the family doing the collecting and display.

The Germans have created miniature villages in one form or another as playsets or train displays for generations. Some of the sweetest pieces come from the Erzgebirge region of Germany, also known as \"Thuringan Mountains\" or Ore Mountains. This area was home to mining families until the ore ran out (about 400 years ago). The area is heavily wooded, so the families in the region turned to making wood and wood by product toys, novelties and holiday items as a way to survive when the mining ran out. Many of these same families are still in the area today, and still making toys!

The little pieces from the Erzgebirge area (its an area, not a town) from the 1920\'s are these darling little miniature people, vehicles, buildings and more (like this one that I am selling). This one is a little man driving a truck with an empty bed. It has little lead wheels that have darkened with age, and is all hand made and hand painted. Sometimes these pieces were sold in sets, and sometimes singly. The sets were marked on the box, but often times when sold in sets, the individual pieces weren\'t marked. (This one isn\'t marked). They were often sold in the US through specialty catalogs at Christmas. One such reseller was the Louis Lange Publisher, a publisher of German books, who sold these little miniatures at Christmas (along with all kinds of German decorations).

There are still little miniatures similar to this being made in Germany today, but once you see them side by side, the antique ones are easy to distinguish. The new ones are made by machine, and have a much more finished look. They won\'t have the antique look, or the look that items have from being hand-made. They also won\'t have lead wheels! (Or you can buy from a dealer like me who knows the difference, and guarantees the authenticity of the pieces).

Anyway, this little piece is lovely - the piece has an overall antique patina that is wonderful; the finish has yellowed, and has crackled. The piece is complete with no broken arms or legs. (Patina is the aged look that items get over time).  It is hand painted and measures 3 1/4\" long and 1 1/2\" tall.  I have other Christmas Putz village pieces, some from the Erzgebirge area of Germany, so take a look.
