This wonderful candle holder is a style called Pyramide or Pyramid, that revolves when the heat from the little candles causes the fans to move. It was made in East Germany in the Erzgebirge region in the 1970\'s, by a family group called "Vero" in the town of Seiffen. Many of the families in this region have been making toys and holiday decorations for generations, often passing the patterns and tools down through the family. After WWII, Germany was divided into "East" and "West", and, some of these family folk art businesses wound up on opposute sides of the "Iron Curtain". The Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and the country was re-unified.
This candle holder has everything in the original box, except the little red candles. The candles are the small ones, just slightly bigger than birthday candles, and easily purchased in craft stores. The candle holders don\'t appear to have been used, as there are no smoke marks or candle drip residue, which are common in these pieces when they are used.
The piece is in near perfect condition - the paint is bright and clean, the wood bright and white, and all the little pieces are in excellent condition with no missing pieces, including the curls on the tree - I didn\'t see any curls that were missing, as is common. The piece has some tiny scratches where the metal rod fits in the middle, under the wood piece that rotates. It is all hand made and hand painted. It is beautifully balanced, so it turns really well.
The piece even has an extra fan blade, in case you lose one, or one is damaged. The candle holder features two little wise men, with little paper crowns, a little Mary with Baby Jesus, and a Shepherd with a hook.
When the candles are lit, the heat from the candles causes the blades at the top to rotate, and the little scene around the tree spins.
The pyramid and the box are in near mint condition. The box is tight, bright and clean, with no smashes or faded marks. The box was originally sealed with brown tape, which is still evident on the box. The makers information is on a label on the side.
The candle holder stands about 12" tall, and is about 7 1/2" wide. It is lovely pastel shades, and won\'t disappoint!
