This is a rare 36” Original Display Model of a CARRETTO SICILIANO; Circa 1951. A Carretto Siciliano (in Italian) or Sicilian Cart, is an ornate, colorful style of horse or donkey-drawn cart native to the island of Sicily, in Italy. The carts were introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks. The Carts reached the height of their popularity in the 1920s. The Museo del Carretto Siciliano, in Terrasini, in the province of Palermo, is a museum dedicated to the carts. Here’s and interesting link to read more on the history of these fabulous horse drawn carts: Both the Horse and Cart are quite ornate, and completely hand-painted. Cart is made of wood and has functioning wheels. Horse is made of wood, covered with some sort of thin layered finish, (plaster perhaps???), that was then painted. Wagon can be unhooked from the horse. Horse does exhibits some wear; finish has chipped off in areas, primarily on the legs. (VIEW PHOTOS). Feathers and cloth portions are somewhat discolored from dust and age. Measurements: Total length approximately 3 ft. long x 1 ½ ft. wide x 21\" tall. Horse: 21 tall x 17\" long.
