Bone china is often considered the highest quality of china. Unlike porcelain, which was invented by the Chinese, bone china was invented by the English after they learned to create porcelain. The porcelain-like materials made by the English before they discovered the formula for true porcelain are sometimes called \'soft-paste porcelain\'. These materials do not have the same strength and translucency found in true porcelain.Bone china has bone ash added to the clay that is moulded and fired. The bone ash makes the clay much stronger, meaning that bone china plates can be extremely thin and still be hardy enough for use. Bone china is also extremely translucent, giving it a delicate look and a timeless appeal.
Always check for a hallmark on the bottom of the cup/saucer for identification.
