BY THE MID-19th CENTURY VALLAURIS, LED BY THE MASSIER FAMILY OF ARTISTS, WAS HOME TO UPWARDS OF 50 DIFFERENT POTTERY HOUSES AND THE REGION WOULD ULTIMATELY PLAY HOST TO PROMINENT POTTERS SUCH GERBINO, FOUCARD-JOURDAN, THE RAMIE\'S, PICAULT, INNOCENTI, KOSTANDA AND CAPRON.

CERTAINLY NOT LEAST AMONG THESE NOTABLE ARTISTS WAS PABLO PICASSO. IN FACT, PICASSO\'S RESIDENCE IN VALLAURIS FROM 1948 TO 1955 WAS LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESURGENCE OF THE CERAMICS INDUSTRY IN SOUTHERN FRANCE DURING THE MID 20th CENTURY. THE CHANGES THAT PICASSO BROUGHT TO THE CERAMICS INDUSTRY IN VALLAURIS WAS NOT JUST A REVITILAZTION OF THAT INDUSTRY, A FULL SCALE REVOLUTION WAS USHERED IN.

VALLAURIS BECAME A PREFERRED DESTINATION FOR ART SCHOOL TRAINED, FINE ARTISTS WHO SOUGHT TO REINVENT THEMSELVES AS \'ARTIST-POTTERS\'. FRENCH POTTERY DURING THIS PERIOD SAW THE EMERGENCE OF A MOVEMENT WHEREBY PRACTICAL PIECES BECAME ART PIECES; FOR EXAMPLE, THE PITCHER AS SCULPTURE. IT WAS ALSO A TIME WHEN SCIENCE AND ART CONVERGED, PARTICULARLY PREVALENT IN THE USE OF NEW GLAZES AND FIRING TECHNIQUES. THE MID-20th CENTURY CERAMICS INDUSTRY IN VALLAURIS MOVED FROM SERIALLY PRODUCED COMMERCIAL AND CULINARY WARE INTO AN AGE OF EXPERIMENTATION AND MODERNITY.

THIS LARGE VASE IS FROM A CERAMICS FACTORY IN VALLAURIS AS INDICATED ON THE BASE OF THE PIECE. THE PARTICULAR FACTORY IN WHICH THIS VASE WAS MANUFACTURED IS NOT INDICATED ON THE BASE OF THE VASE. BASED UPON THE SHEER NUMBER OF CERAMIC FACTORIES THAT HAVE EXISTED IN VALLAURIS OVER THE COURSE OF MANY, MANY DECADES, UNLESS THE ORIGINATING FACTORY IS INDICATED ON THE PIECE IT IS ALMOST AN IMPOSSIBILITY TO IDENTIFY THAT FACTORY. THE VASE IS SIGNED AND THAT SIGNATURE READS \'J FONCK\'. THE WORDS \'FAIT MAIN\' AND THE NUMBER \'205\' ALSO APPEAR ON THE BASE OF THE VASE. \'FAIT MAIN WAS USED BY VALLAURIS ARTISTS TO INDICATE THAT THE PIECE IS HAND MADE. THE NUMBER MAY REPRESENT A MOLD NUMBER.

AFTER SEVERAL EXHAUSTIVE SEARCHES WE HAVE COME UP EMPTY HANDED WITH REGARDS TO ANY BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION FOR JACQUES FONCK. WE WERE ABLE TO ASCERTAIN THAT FONCK OFTEN PARTNERED WITH CERAMIC ARTIST JEAN MATEO AND THEY ARE OFTEN MENTIONED TOGETHER.
