Vaughn Bode Full Color Original Art 1967 Lizard Underground :
$1400.00

Original page by Vaughn Bode, color felt tip pen on illustration board, with signs of Pencil. It is 12.5\"x 8.5\". It is in very good condition, with bright colors, and some signs of handling, but very good overall. It has some water staining on the right hand edge that does not detract too much from the work. It is signed on the back in pen in Vaughn Bode\'s hand, along with his address in Syracuse, NY, at the time. Also written on the back in pencil is the date Sept. 12, 1967, and the words \"Plate 2\". It was purchased by me from Bode\'s son, Mark Bode, nearly 15 years ago, and comes with an accompanying dated letter of authenticity and identification written by Mark on the back of a postcard from Psychedelic Solution, the gallery Mark owned and ran in New York City. It is unframed. This is a very rare and important original piece of artwork by underground comix legend Vaughn Bode. It is plate #2 from the \"Larry Stickle Todd\" story from September 1967. This makes it a very, very early example of original underground comic art by one of the most important founders (along with Robert Crumb) of the D.I.Y./underground comics movement. Whats more, it is a large full color example featuring Bode\'s trademark Lizard as well as his biting literary style, both of which are already fully realized even at this early date. The fact the Lizard is tripping and \"seeing god\" makes it an important and timely work of psycedelia as well, given the date it was produced. In all, it has everything you would want from an exceedingly rare and historically important 1967 piece of original underground art.Bode\'s influence on art and culture today is not as widely recognized (by the art market and the general public) as Crumb\'s, but it is arguably even more extensive. Bode\'s style , visual language, and even his characters were widely used and adapted by the original pioneers of graffiti art. By these means, Bode\'s art is one of the most important early influences on the visual style of hip and hop and mass culture today. With an important work from this period by Robert Crumb recently selling for over $700,000 at sale, this work is vastly undervalued. As Bode\'s art and influence (particularly on graffitti and hip hop culture), becomes more widely known, the value of this work will surely appreciate, and appreciate a great deal. no longer seems to allow links included in descriptions but a google search for \"frtiz the cat heritage sales\" will turn up info on the Crumb sale. Now for the business stuff.
