This very good antique French violin
is offered to the highest buyer with . The violin bears a label from the shop of Orin Weeman in Boston. Weeman operated a shop in Boston in the late 19th and early 20th century. It indicates that this violin was graduated there, meaning the the plates were thinned down to thicknesses similar to those of the violins made by the great Cremonese makers. It was not uncommon for European violins intended for export to the USA, to be made rather heavily wooded, to survive the ocean voyage and changes in climate without cracking. Luthiers in the United States could often improve the sound rather dramatically by carefully removing wood from inside the violin to make the plates the optimal thickness. The violin was made in Mirecourt, France just before the turn of the 20th century. It has some similarities to violins of the Caussin school, particularly the model, varnish style, color and antiquing technique. Other characteristics identifying it as Mirecourt include the scroll eyes, the shape and placement of the ffs, the wide linings, four full corner blocks, the squared corners, round and well-shaped button and the cleated center seam of the two-piece back. The back is made from even, intensely flamed maple that matches that of the ribs and the neck. The top is from very straight and very tightly-grained old spruce.
The violin is in very good original condition with only very minor cracks to the top that have been well-repaired. The cracks are located at the top of the treble f hole and a tiny wing crack above the same lower eye. There are also two tiny saddle cracks of less than an inch. Other than those minor repairs which are all solid and stable, the violin is in excellent condition. It is rather rare to find an old violin like this with such minor repairs. The varnish is original, an oil preparation that is transparent and durable. The tone of this violin is excellent. It has great depth, excellent volume and power and plays very easily. The violin has a wide open tone, ringing out freely and easily with warmth and chiming overtones. The tone is certainly colored to the darker side; warm and resonant with unusual depth. It speaks easily, clearly and precisely and responds fast and predictably. While the violin certainly has a darker core, when pressed hard by an aggressive player, there is a dominating brilliance and penetrating ability that makes this a very capable performance instrument for an accomplished player. This is an exciting and energetic violin to play and will be a real treat for a person who has not had the pleasure of playing a very good sounding and powerful violin.

This is a full-sized violin. The back measures 14 1/8 inches or 358 mm.
