The violin is unlabeled, but it appears to me to have some attributes of old Czech or Bohemian work for the 19th century. I thought at first it was likely Schonbach or Markneukirchen cottage work from the same period, but the inside work and shape of the scroll, style of purfling and varnish suggests Czech from my experience. The violin has four heavily contoured corner blocks and wide linings. The mitered purfling bisect the center of the corners and the center seam of the back was reinforced with cleats when it was made. The varnish is a liberally applied oil varnish naturally shaded from time and heavy use. This violin has never been made to look old but has earned it clean and rich patina from use. Regardless of its origin, and I could be 100 miles off, this is a well-made and artistically executed violin by, most likely, a single accomplished maker. The measurements are excellent and classical. The back is 355mm, string length of 328mm and a body stop of 195mm.This violin has a balanced and even tone with volume and power. It is neither frankly dark nor stridently bright but a very flexible and pleasing balance of color. The sound is open rich and full, warm and dulcet when played softly but loud, brilliant and forceful when played more aggressively. This is a violin that delivers a clean and pure tone, whether with a light bow or really digging in. Some violins collapse when pressed hard but this instrument has a reserve of power and shows off when played hard. The tone is loaded with juicy overtones that blossom when the violin is played well, and ring out giving the impression of more than one instrument in the room. The violin is easy to play due to its perfect dimensions and excellent set up. This is a flexible and very capable performance tool for the accomplished player.
