Offering this very rare ca. late 1860\'s carte de visite of significant historic importance showing a charming scene of a hand operated carousel in theChamps-Élysées, Paris France. Gustav Dentzel was the first to pioneer the steam powered carousel in America in the early 1860\'s, and soon following the trend began to spread throughout the country and into Europe. During this time, amusement park and carnival rides of complex construction were intheirinfancy and were often rather dangerous and even fatal to patrons. Very few images of these incredible machines from this period are in existence, making this a quite special photo indeed. I have been buying, selling, and trading civil war era photography for nearly twenty years, and this is the first period carte de visite example I have yet to see featuring such a subject.
Photo condition and quality are superior. The bright orange card mount of CDV\'s and stereoviews etc. first began to appear in the late 1860\'s, but yet were more popular from 1870 and onwards, and still is somewhat unusualfor this card. The reverse shows adhered paper mount to photographer Baptiste Guerard of Paris, France. Guerard is best known for his monumental and scenic stereoviews of French and European subject. The inherent beauty andgrandeur of 19th century Victorian life is captured in this extraordinary photograph by Guerard.
