DARKEY JOKES AND FUNNY STORIES. Published by Wehman Brothers Publishers, New York in 1916. 58 pp plus 6 pages of ads at the back of the book. First edition.
It\'s hard to believe that such blatant racism could have been published a century ago in the U.S. But this little book is full of jokes about chicken-stealing, lying, lazy black people, most of whom are almost illiterate and say things like,\"Whah yo gwine do wid de telescope?\" and, \"Wha\'fo am de \'casion ob yer sore nose?\". Black people are described as \"darkies\",\"coons\", and \"Sambos\". There are even jokes about lynching!
The front cover of the book shows two black men dressed in flashy-style clothes. They both have exaggeratedly thick red lips. On the back cover are ads for Irish jokes, Dutch jokes, Hebrew jokes and Coon jokes, among others.
Fortunately, there aren\'t many of these books around anymore. They have slowly disappeared and this book has become an extremely rare of racism at its worst.
