Extremely rare 1920\'s Johnny or Al Grabowski buckle back model catcher\'s mitt.
This mitt is an \"error\" mitt.
Johnny Grabowski was a catcher who played from 1924-31. He played with the Yankees, White Sox and Tigers including with the 1927 Yankees.
Johnny Grabowski, Pat Collins and Benny Bengough split catching duties with the 1927 Yankees and Grabowski bested the trio with a .277 batting average and had 2 AB\'s in the 1927 World Series.
The reason this is an \"error\" mitt is because the endorsement is for \"Al\" Grabowski who was a left handed pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1929 and 1930. I can\'t make out the manufacturer but clearly someone had some explaining to do, either that or had a big laugh and hoped no one would notice.
The mitt is in good condition with a nice antique patina. It measures 9 x 9 1/2 inches. I can get my medium size hand inside but it would be too small for a large hand. The web area was re-laced. The right strap on the buckle back wrist strap was missing and was replaced using a piece of soft leather and leather glue. The cloth piping has lots of wear. There is a seam separation in the web area (see photos). No writing.
The Al Grabowski facsimile is light but readable. Al wasn\'t a complete scrub himself. He compiled a 9-6 record over 2 seasons and did pitch for the 1930 pennant winning Cardinals.
