Kiyoshi Saito was born in Sakamoto, Fukushima prefecture in Japan. He studied western style paintings during his time at the Hongo Painting Institute and showed his paintings with many art groups and societies. In 1938, He published “Winter in Aizu” and started gaining fame. He won his first prize on 1951 with his “Steady Gaze”. Saito was known for primarily working with woodblocks and he used many different woodblocks for his work.
