Very Rare MARTINSBURG WV Robert Patterson ARMY CAMP 1861 Civil War Newspaper (Note: additional images are located below the description) Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: THE AMERICAN UNION, Martinsburg, Virginia, July 4, 1861

* Very rare army camp title
* Gen. Robert Patterson command
* American Civil War

This is the first issue of an extremely rare newspaper: "Printed By The Division Of The American Army Under Major General Patterson." as noted in the masthead, from what is present-day West Virginia. A note on page 2 states how it began: "...At dark on the evening of the 3rd two disciples of Faust came to the writer of these lines & proposed to get out a newspaper for the glorious 4th. The idea was adopted, was submitted to the high authorities & approved of by them & volunteer printers were then called for. They stepped out by dozens...and at ten o'clock the squad of 12 entered the office of the 'Virginia Republican", struck a light, found plenty of paper, ink, etc. & went to work. The result of the night's labor is before you, reader, and under the circumstances we have no apology to make for its imperfections. The 'Virginia Republican' was a bitter organ of the secessionists until recently when its editor closed up the concern & joined the rebel army...".

Exceedingly rare, as Gregory's "Union List Of American Newspapers" notes only 4 different dates of this title are known to exist, held by just 4 institutions.

Most of the front page is taken up with a printing of the: "Declaration of Independence" carrying over to page 2. Among the articles are: "The Advance Into Virginia" "The Army In Virginia" "A Spy Captured" "War Items" "The Voice of Washington" & more. Also a poem titled: "The Secession Cavalry". The back page has an address: "To the People of Virginia" in which emphasis is made that the Union army has no interest in disturbing the residents, bits noting: "...The troops who fight under the star spangled banner wage no war of aggression. They seek not to oppress the weak nor to inflict injury upon the innocent. They have no desire to injure private property...They have come among you to reestablish peace & order..." with more (see).

Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, measures 9 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches, a bit of fixing, very nice condition.
