VERY SCARCE BOLD BLACK & WHITE \"MACHINE AGE\" ART DECO ARDENETTE COMPACT Must See

Here\'s another marvelous Machine Age or Art Moderne compact from the Art Deco period. It\'s the epitome of the bold styling and tri-level Skyscraper Style so popular in the 1920s and \'30s. This style emphasizes strong, spare design with no twining flowers or ornate decoration. I love the combination of stark black, white and silver on the lid as well as the strong upright bands on the back. If you like this type of styling, you will love this one. It\'s an Ardenette, made by the Elizbeth Arden in 1927. Ardenettes were only made from 1926 until about 1933, so there are very few of them around today.

The compact measures 2 1/8\" by 2 1/8\" by just under 1/2\" and is octagonally shaped. The lid is finished in glossy black enamel and decorated with strong silver bands and smaller bands made up of small white chunks of enamel. There are six different levels of bands, very much like a 1920s skyscraper. There are no scratches, dents or dings. The eight sides are bright silver with no damage of any kind. The hinge is strong and the clasp snaps tightly closed. On the back are many upright bands of various widths in silver chrome. No dents or dings here either.

Inside, the octagonal silver metal mirror is nice and bright, with no rust spots, scratches or any problems at all. The mirror flips up, revealing the round powder well with a gleaming silver octagonal surround and a small metal lip to hold a puff in place. The rouge sits on a removable silver tin and can be replaced with ease. Below, the brilliant silver powder lid has a mirror-like finish. It is marked ARDENETTE along the edge. The lid lifts to show the beautiful underside, which has a shimmering silver-washed finish and is edged in pale peach flocking. It is rare to find this flocking except on very high-end compacts. It is marked with the patent number 1635631, indicating a patent date of 1927. The powder well is clean and it holds a lovely little puff topped with pale peach silk. It has a silk ribbon across is marked ARDEN in gold.

For those of you who enjoy Machine Age or Art Moderne style, or if you like to collect rare and unusual vintage compacts, this is the one for you!

Ardenette. American. A cosmetics line made by Elizabeth Arden Inc, New York, New York. Launched in 1926 Ardenette became best known as one the very few brands that appear on compact and vanity cases used by Elizabeth Arden to package her products. Ardenette peaked in the early 1930s.

SKYSCRAPER DESIGN
In the 1920s and \'30s, Art Deco styling used the American skyscraper as a model for bold design, usually incorporating three or more levels, such as is seen on skyscrapers built during that period.
