Very rarely seen early 1700s German faience stoneware stein w/1741 inscribed lid:

We are listing this very rarely seen early 1700s German faience stoneware stein with a period pewter lid inscribed IPW 1744 inside a leafy wreath. The mug itself is hand decorated with a delicate flower and bird design, and its wire cut base is marked with a blue letter N (I do not know which potter used this mark). On page 52 of THE BEER STEIN BOOK A 400 Year History there is a picture of an early 1700s faience stein from Ansbach Germany which has the very same bird and floral design as the listed stein and an identically shaped pewter lid and thumb plate (which the author values at $1500-$2000). Faience is not a very durable medium, and thus most old pieces are damaged. The listed piece is no exception, although it displays rather well. The glaze is worn off the rim edge where the lid covers it, there are three short very thin hairlines coming down from the rim (see the last two pictures), and there are chips off the handle finish (see the prior two pictures). With its lid and thumb plate it is 6 inches tall, 4.25 inches at its widest point, attractively decorated, nicely monogrammed and dated on the lid, and it is in good overall condition (with the damage previously discussed). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very rarely seen early German faience stein, with a nicely personalized and dated lid.
