Very rarely seen mask-spouted 1840 Victoria & Albert salt glazed stoneware jug :
$124.99

We are listing this large very rarely seen superbly sprigged 1840 dog handled salt glazed stoneware jug (with a domed pewter lid) commemorating the marriage that year of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It is unmarked (typical of old saltglaze), but it features a Derbyshire handle and was likely made by one of the Brampton potteries (see the BROWNE MUGGS reference below). The jug features a very uncommon (and very striking) mask spout, a greyhound handle, a very elaborate royal arms sprig on the front (interestingly, it is the pre-1836 version with the Hanover shield in the middle), a wonderful sprig of the crowned Victoria on one side (with QUEEN VICTORIA incised under it), a very nice sprig of Albert in his military uniform on the other side (with PRINCE ALBERT incised under it), elaborate cornucopia sprigs on either side of the handle, and a band of grapevines around its neck. The cornucopia and Victoria & Albert sprigs can be seen on a dark brown jug on page 56 of STONEWARE BOTTLES From Bellarmines to Ginger Beers 1500-1949, but that jug does not have the mask spout and greyhound handle. On page 107 of BROWNE MUGGS English Brown Stoneware (the catalog from the Victoria & Albert Museum\'s 1985 stoneware exhibition) there is a Brampton hunt jug with the mask spout and greyhound handle, and in the description of that jug they date it to 1840 based on the existence of a Victoria and Albert sprigged jug with the same mask spout (which would either be the listed jug or one just like it). With its lid the listed jug is 8 inches tall, 8 inches at its widest point, it makes a very impressive display piece, and it is in very good condition. Although there are no visible repairs to the piece, under a black light there is an area to the right of the Victoria sprig which may have been very professionally restored. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very rarely seen, very striking jug.
