Victorian Chain Mail Evening Bag**

This Victorian genuine chain mail (as in what the medieval knights wore) evening bag has a double accordion top, a rare combination.Rare because theaccordion style top is mostly seen nowadays with Whiting and Davis\' much later flat mesh bags (which many seller\'s are now calling \'chain mail\' or more appropriately, chain mesh; and they are still being made). Though unmarked, it is mostprobably made by Whiting and Davis because they were the only American company making chain mail at the time. They actually patented a machine that made the chain mail \'fabric\', saving time and money over the previously all hand made chain mail (purses were still hand assembled).W&D even sold chain mail fabric to the Brits and French.
The accordion top and lid are silver over brass. C. 1880-1910. This lovely bag was usually hung from a lady\'s chatelaine or belt while attending a formal event; just large enough to hold a lipstick, perfume, and perhaps a handkerchief. It is truly a one of a kind piece!
Top measures approximately 1 in. in diameter and the bag itself measures 1 7/8 in. at widest point and 2 ½ in. long. It is in excellent condition except for very faint areas where brass shows through on lid and handle chain.
** 07/28/14 A similar purse, item number: 251587729148, seller beforenagain (324 ), has just sold for US $53.04 (including std. shipping) in the UK AND it was in considerably worse condition: missing the original wrist/belt chain, the bottom brass ball drops, and with holes/missing connections between the chain mail and accordion/gate top. This makes my starting price of $65 and Buy It Now price of $85.00 seem right on target.
