This is a beautiful little late Victorian cameo carved from apeach to salmon colored piece of natural, un-dyed Mediterranean coral. Theclassical Lady is in an unusual pose, looking over her right shoulder. She is carved in high relief and is a deeppeach color. She is elaborately carved with flowers in in her hair. She has adraped garment and a scarf. Beautifully detailed carving in high relief with noapparent wear.

The frame is a beautiful deep gold with an exquisitely renderedframe in an Etruscan Revival motif. The frame is in the elaborate gold-work ofthe Estruscan Revival Style with a 22K gold finish. I was told this is solid gold, probably 15-18 K, but the marks on the pin stem are impossible for me to read (you mayreturn if it tests as less than 15 K).The gold definitely LOOKS 22K. The quality of the goldwork is absolutelymuseum grade! There is a pin with an open tube C-clasp (covers the pin so itdoesn’t prick when worn as a pendant) and an open hook for a chain on top. An elegant piece! This small oval cameo can be worn as a pin orpendant. I bought her from a dealer in New York years ago.

She is in perfect condition for a lady 150 years old! You can see from the back that this is asingle piece of natural Mediterranean coral with no dye.

WEIGHT: 9.0 gm.

SIZE: 34.54x 25.58 x 12.18.

MARKS: 2 very worn marks on the pin that I can\'t read.

The piece came from Europe, circa 1870.

Coralhas been extensively used for jewelry from Greek and Roman times to the 20thcentury, and from Asia to Europe and North America. It can come in colors ranging from white toblack and from pale peach through salmon, tomato and the intense red of nobelcoral. Coral is an organic derived “stone” being the exo-skeleton and supportof the coral polyp colony. Only somespecies of coral are considered semi-precious, gemstone quality and most ofthis has, through history, come from the Mediterranean. This is becoming very scarce now due topollution and over-harvesting. Most ofthe contemporary coral is of inferior grade and dyed to give color.
